The Chinese Sauce Hoisin, sometimes called Chinese BBQ sauce, is a classic Chinese sauce. Hoisin has become indispensable in our kitchen because it is so simple to make and has such a wide variety of uses.

We use Hoisin frequently in stir fries and barbecues and it is really delicious on its own as a dip for parties and snacks. Peking Duck is one well known example of the use of this Chinese sauce.

Although Hoisin sauce is widely available commercially not all Hoisin is the same. There are many variations of the basic recipe each with its own particular flavour. Some recipes even replace the Black Bean Sauce with Peanut Butter. A good Hoisin sauce has a mixture of flavours and should be sweet, salty and spicy. Making your own Hoisin allows you to adjust the ingredients to suit your family’s preference. If you have never tried Hoisin sauce before, start with our simple recipe below. You’ll wonder how you ever managed without it.
