Dragon Fruit – Pitaya – Hylocereus

Pitaya, better known as Dragon Fruit, is the fruit of a cactus of the genus Hylocereus. Native to Central and South America, Dragon Fruit are now widely grown in S.E.Asia. Dragon Fruit are available in several varieties. There are red skinned Dragon Fruit with red flesh, red skinned Dragon Fruit with white flesh and whilst not often seen in Asia, there are yellow skinned Dragon Fruit with white flesh. The flavour of the different varieties is very similar though some people say that the red fleshed Pitaya are a little sweeter.

Dragon Fruit is one of the most attractive and exotic tropical fruits in Asia, not only because of the fruit but also its flowers are among the most beautiful of all, although you will have to get up very early to see them as Dragon Fruit flower only at night. As there are usually few insects around to pollinate the flowers during the night, this task is undertaken by Bats or by hand pollination.

Dragon Fruit is juicy, slightly sweet and extremely low in calories. The black seeds are completely harmless and add a slight crunch to the fruit and make excellent dietary fiber. The fruit contains large amounts of Vitamin C and Potassium and also have a high Calcium content.

How to eat Dragon Fruit. The easiest way to eat Dragon Fruit is to cut the fruit in half and scoop out the juicy flesh with a spoon. Dragon Fruit can be eaten at room temperatue but has a slightly better flavour when slightly chilled. Whilst Dragon Fruit is normally eaten fresh, either on its own or in fruit salads, various fruity drinks can be made using Dragon Fruits. Dragon Fruit is also used to make a fruit wine.
